Getting your belongings back

If Shield Recovery has your vehicle, call to ask about collecting your belongings. Confirm where to go, when to come and what to bring before making the trip.

Three things to ask on the phone

  • Call to confirm The address to come to, and whether that is the office or the lot.
  • Call to confirm The hours belongings can be collected, and whether you need an appointment.
  • Call to confirm Whether there is a charge, and what forms of payment are taken.

Write down the collection details and bring any paperwork the office asks you to provide.

What to do, in order

Four steps. The first one is the only one you need to get right today.

  1. Call 707-554-8300 and ask for personal property

Say that your vehicle was recovered and that you want to collect your belongings. If you have the year, make, model and licence plate, have them ready. Call even if you do not.

    • You do not need the inventory notice to make this call.
    • You do not need to talk about the loan. Shield is not the lender.
  2. Agree a time before you travel

Ask when you can come and how much notice is needed for your belongings to be pulled and waiting. Ask whether an appointment is required. Write down the address you are given.

  3. Confirm the identification and paperwork

Ask which identification and documents are accepted. If somebody else is collecting for you, confirm the written authorization and identification they must bring.

    • See What to bring for the full checklist.
  4. Collect and check the list

Ask to check your belongings against the inventory before you leave. Tell the office promptly if an item is missing or damaged.

What happens to your belongings

California law generally requires personal effects to be removed, inventoried, labelled and securely stored. Some items, including hazardous items, require special handling.

The inventory notice is generally due within 48 hours of recovery. California law allows additional time in specified circumstances, including weekends and postal holidays. It must say what was found, where the property is held, the business hours and telephone number for collecting it, and any charge for removing and storing it. And the property has to be kept for at least 60 days from the date of that notice.

Do not wait for the letter

The notice may be mailed or personally served. If mailed, delivery takes additional time. Call before it arrives to ask about collection. Unclaimed property may be disposed of after the statutory storage period.

Items that stay with the vehicle

Vehicle equipment and personal belongings are treated differently. Some mounted items are detachable personal effects. Contact operations about a specific item; if ownership or classification is disputed, you may also need to contact the legal owner.

If somebody else is collecting for you

California requires written authorization from the debtor before personal effects are released to someone else. Call to confirm the accepted authorization and identification before sending another person.

Call to confirm Call 707-554-8300 before you send anybody, and ask exactly what they need to bring and whose name has to be on it.

Your information

The inventory of your belongings is a confidential document. Under the same section of California law it can be released to you, in response to a court order or a lawful subpoena, or where you have given written consent after the repossession. It is not given to anybody else on request.

Your vehicle is a separate question.

Contact the lender named on your loan agreement about getting the vehicle back. Ask operations separately about collecting personal belongings.

Who decides
The lender or finance company named on your loan paperwork or your monthly statement. If you are not sure who that is, the name is on either one.
What Shield can do
Shield cannot release a vehicle without authorisation from that lender. Once the lender authorises it, Shield acts on it.
What you can do today
Call to arrange collection of your belongings and confirm any identification, authorization or charge that applies.
Property questions

Call before you travel.

One phone call gets you the address, the hours, what to bring and whether anything is owed. It is the difference between one trip and two.
